Kerry Kalweit
Region within South Africa: Pretoria, South Africa
Task team(s) involved in: Executive, Camps, Educational Material
Date of birth: 2 January 1991
Year of diabetes diagnosis: 2004
Current occupation: Studying MSc Clinical Epidemiology in diabetes research at the University of Pretoria.
How did you become involved in YWD? I was invited on YWD’s first camp back in 2005, and then participated in a Youth Leader training.
What do you believe is the biggest issue in diabetes in South Africa? A lack of diabetes education and long waiting times to see a doctor/nurse are huge issues in diabetes. Also testing strips are not on tender, thus the availability is limited and non-standardised.
What do you plan to achieve for 2014/15 in YWD as an NEC member? I wish to apply for YWD to become a member association of the International Diabetes Federation and also to increase our presence in schools.
